Recreation Therapy Practicum

This document outlines the practicum information  for students enrolled in the Recreation Therapy Aide Diploma. The program is designed to provide students with real-world experience in a controlled and supervised environment.

To ensure the safety and well-being of all participants, including students, instructors, and clients, the following mandatory requirements must be met prior to any practical exams or clinical practice.

  1. Practicum Requirements (Mandatory)
  1. Standard CPR or First Aid Certificate – It is required for all students to secure and keep up-to-date a valid certificate in Standard CPR or First Aid from an accredited institution. These certifications must remain active and valid for the entirety of the student’s practical or internship training period.
  2. Vaccination Record – Students are required to provide a complete and up-to-date vaccination record. This helps mitigate the risk of transmitting infectious diseases within the clinic environment, safeguarding the health of both students and clients.
  3. Police Clearance – Students are required to complete a police background check to confirm the absence of any criminal history that might affect their appropriateness for roles as Recreation Therapy Aide students.

  1. Monthly Orientation Sessions:
    A monthly orientation session will be held by the placement officer or practicum coordinator for all Recreation Therapy Aide students. These sessions are designed to ensure that students are fully informed and effectively guided throughout their practicum experience. During these orientations, policies, procedures, and essential requirements will be thoroughly discussed to prepare students for their journey.

  1. Practicum Credit Acquisition::
  • Earning Practicum Hours through College Outreach Events:
    Students in the Recreation Therapy Aide Program will be given the chance to earn practicum credit hours by taking part in college-sponsored outreach events at various locations. Participation in these events is mandatory and will be documented on the student’s practicum timesheet, which must be submitted to the placement officer upon successful completion.
  • Work-Based Practicum Waiver:
    If a student is employed in a field related to the program, the college may exempt them from practicum requirements. Submission of a current employment certificate to the college or placement officer is necessary for approval.

  1. Practicum Assignments:
    To ensure all students have the opportunity to complete their practicum requirements, those lacking a predetermined practicum site will be thoughtfully placed in facilities or locations that are conveniently situated near their residence. This will guarantee access to practical experience for every student, facilitating their professional development and ensuring they meet the program’s practicum obligations effectively.

  1. Completion of Practicum:
    Students must submit their completed Timesheet and the employer’s Evaluation from the practicum to the placement officer to fulfill academic requirements.Completing the practicum is a critical milestone for Recreation Therapy Aide diploma students, marking the transition from academic learning to professional readiness. This phase allows students to apply their knowledge in practical settings, enhancing their skills in therapeutic recreation and understanding of client needs. It builds a strong ethical base and interpersonal skills, preparing them for a positive and impactful career in their field
